ABOUT TARGOVISTE ABOUT TARGOVISTE
Targoviste the former capital of Romania is a town with a rich culture and history located in the southern part of Romania and with easy access from Bucharest. Targoviste can be found by via the DN7 and DN71 just 80 kilometres north of Bucharest. There are plenty of activities to choose from and well worth a visit.  Amongst the activities are historic sites together with a range of parks and museums. Outdoor pursuits include biking, camping, caving, climbing, fishing, hiking, nature walks, wildlife and bird watching.  In the winter an outdoor ice ring is set up in the town centre. In the summer there are numerous bars, cafés and terraces to choose from together with places for a barbecue. Boat hire on the lake and bikes are available for hire in the town. A variety of churches and a monastery a short drive from the town.
Historic Sites
Chindia Tower Ancient Ruins Symbol of the old fortress of Targoviste, “Chindia” Tower (“the Sunset Tower”) was build in the second reign of Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler). Inside is a display of pictures and artefacts mapping the history of Targoviste.
Princely Court The Princely Court in Targoviste is a museum complex of medieval buildings and fortifications, which served as a residence of the Valachia rulers for more than three centuries. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Romania, appreciated for its high artistic and historical value.  Address: Calea Domnească, no 181, Targoviste, Dambovita. Museums
History Museum The history museum was opened to visitors in September 1986 in the former "Palace of Justice".  The museum exhibits pottery, figurines coins, jewellery and decorative art, from the history of Romanian people, the Palaeolithic era until 1918.   Address: Str. Rare Books Museum Targoviste has a rare-books museum that was the former residence of Princess Safta; it exhibits trace the history of printing in Romania. The Museum of Printing and Old Romanian Books in exhibits the 1521 manuscript believed to be among the earliest texts written in Romanian. National Museum Complex - The Royal Court of Targoviste Architectural, history, monument and art.  The Royal Court represents one of the best kept medieval complexes in Romania and has operated for more than three centuries (1396-1714) both as a residence and a royal throne.
